Abstract

Rapid urbanization is consequential to the spatial growth of cities. The rate urbanisation has been quite fast tracked by the post-millennial occurrences within traditional cities. This occurrence is not farfetched from the spatial growth of the core of Ibadan. This study aim was to analyze the trend, intensity and form of urban expansion of the interior traditional core of Ibadan between the year 2000 and 2020. The urban land densification of the study area was also determined for the 20 years period. Three sets of satellite imageries (2000, 2013, and 2020) were subjected to a maximum likelihood supervised classification. The study revealed that four types of urban expansion intensity (High rapid, rapid, moderate, and very low) were identified as the built areas expand from 6603.12hec to 10287.54hec. The study also revealed that between year 2000 – 2013, all the local government areas within the core of Ibadan had an edge expansion while between 2013 – 2020, leapfrogging was identified in 2 (Ibadan north and Ibadan northeast) local government areas (LGA) and edge expansion in 3 (Ibadan southwest, Ibadan southeast, and Ibadan northeast) LGA. The study further reveals varying urban densification amongst the local government areas in the core of Ibadan. This study concludes that swift urban planning is required to address the sprawling at the edge of each of the interior LGAs of Ibadan.
